Spring pads on the Mercedes W210 and W124: How to lower your classic – without extensive chassis modifications
If you want your classic Mercedes to sit a little lower, you don't necessarily have to order new springs. For the W210 (E-Class 1995–2002) and W124 (E-Class 1985–1995), there's a more elegant way: replacing the spring pads. A small intervention with a noticeable effect – if you know what you're doing.
What are spring pads anyway?
Spring pads – also known as spring seats or spring mounts – sit on top of the coil spring and rest in the spring perch. Mercedes developed a nubs system for these series: Depending on the vehicle weight, equipment, and engine, different strength pads are installed ex works so that all vehicles maintain the same ride height despite various special features.
The clever side effect: If you replace the pads with thinner ones, you can selectively lower the vehicle. Without spring compressor drama, without new springs – and completely reversible.

Important: Front and rear spring pads on the W124/W201 are not interchangeable – different geometries. The rear axle also has a maximum of 3 nubs.
How to calculate the lowering
The pad doesn't sit directly on the wheel, but at the top of the spring perch. The axle geometry amplifies the height change at the pad to the vehicle level – Mercedes specifies an official calculation factor of 1.3.
The formula:
Lowering = (Thickness of old pad − Thickness of new pad) × 1.3
Example W210: Change from 5 nubs (21 mm) to 1 nub (5 mm):
(21 mm − 5 mm) × 1.3 = 20.8 mm lowering
Almost 21 mm – this is the maximum range that spring pads offer on the W210. For the W124, changing from 4 to 1 nub at the front results in about 20 mm (16 mm × 1.3). For many classic car enthusiasts, this is just the right amount: noticeably lower, without compromising the suspension.

What you need to know before replacing
1. Always replace in pairs
Spring pads are changed per axle – meaning both sides simultaneously. A unilateral change leads to uneven vehicle level and poor handling.
2. Wheel alignment mandatory afterwards
Even small height changes affect camber and toe. After every spring pad replacement, the vehicle must undergo wheel alignment – otherwise, tire wear and driving stability will suffer.
3. Do not buy used pads
Spring pads are wear parts. Used ones can be hardened or torn and offer little damping. At a new price of approx. 8–15 € per piece, original parts are always worth it.
4. Observe wedge shape and installation direction
The pads are wedge-shaped and have a defined installation direction. For the W124 and W201, the wedge shape must be correctly aligned after installation – otherwise, the vehicle will sit crooked.
5. Don't forget the spring compressor
For a safe replacement, a spring compressor is needed to decompress the spring and lift it out of the perch. This tool is available at many tool rental shops. Alternatively, independent workshops often perform the installation at a fair price.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know which spring pads are currently installed? On the W124 and W201, the front pad can be inspected without jacking up the car – simply push up the plastic protector on the shock absorber, and the nubs will be directly visible. At the rear, jacking up is usually necessary. On the W210, the pads are accessible above the spring in the spring perch.
Can I use W124 pads in the W210? For the W210 pre-facelift (until approx. 1999), there are reports of compatibility – but the dimensions differ. From the W210 facelift onwards, Mercedes completely revised the springs and spring perches. Always use model-specific parts.
Does the factor 1.3 also apply to W202 and R129? According to the manufacturer, the spring pads from W124/W201 also fit in W202 and R129 – the geometry is comparable. However, the calculation factor of 1.3 is specific to the W210. For W202 and R129, the factor should be verified beforehand in relevant forums.
